Steve Schmidt: Josh Hawley is Disgraced

Steve Schmidt

Editor's Note: Steve Schmidt is one of the founding members of the Lincoln Project. He is a communications and public affairs strategist who has worked on several Republican campaigns, including John McCain's 2008 bid for the White House, and he is now a regular political contributor to MSNBC. On Thursday, Schmidt unleashed a scathing attack on Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley. MaxNewsToday has assembled this six-tweet thread and reprinted it as one easy-to-read op-ed for our ongoing segment, Schmidt Storm. It has been edited for grammar and clarity. Josh Hawley. Stanford. Yale Law School. Oxford. Clerk to the Chief Justice of the United States. Academically brilliant. Josh has been told he is special all his life. He became a U.S. Senator before he was 40. All of that achievement obscured how soulless, rotten and cynical he is. Josh Hawley is responsible, in large measure, for six people being killed. They were killed by Hawley's cynicism. They were killed by Ted Cruz's cynicism. They were killed by Kevin McCarthy's cynicism. They were killed because of their lying, incitement and insanity in the name of Trump. Now, Josh Hawley is disgraced. His gold-plated resume can’t save him. His peer group now is Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan, Louis Gohmert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert and the rest of the freak-show caucus. Simon & Shuster won't publish his lies, so he is now consigned the home of Dinesh D'Souza. Josh Hawley, one of America’s most gilded elites, is fated to spend the balance of his ruined political career in a political version of the Big Brother house. He is in a sort of prison, sentenced to the company of people he despises. He is worshipped by the people he tried to play and use. He has contempt for them. He thinks they are stupid. They were a means to an end, and the end was the presidency he believed was his destiny. He is ruined. He is disgraced. He can host a Newsmax show with Sean Spicer, or maybe sell fish oil with Sebastian Gorka. The fascist faux Ph.D. and Josh Hawley can discuss their academic credentials and scheme with the MyPillow nut in a tree house with podcasting equipment. They are him, and he is they. Forever. Expel him.
