Lock Him Up

Photo credit: Patrick Semansky/AP. Donald Trump received reports of Russians paying bounties for soldiers' deaths in March.

We now know the reason Donald Trump defends Confederates with such inexplicable zeal. Like them, he is a traitor to this nation.

In March, Trump received intelligence that Russia offered Afghan militants bounties last year to kill U.S. military personnel, according to a report in the New York Times. Trump has sat on the information for months without taking action, while at the same time lobbying for Russian interests at the international level. Twenty American troops were killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2019, although it is unknown how many deaths were the result of Russian covert operations.

This is the same president who attacked Colin Kaepernick and NFL players for supposedly disrespecting the military by taking a knee during the national anthem. What is more disrespectful? Taking a knee to protest police brutality against people of color, or rolling over for our international adversaries?

At this point, we have become immune to the president’s laundry list of indiscretions. He is running a lawless administration, because shameless congressional Republicans defend him and refuse to stop it. He has committed so many crimes that many expect he will be indicted within days of leaving office.

This man’s priorities, especially lately, are completely callous. Trump appears to be waging war against Americans, doing everything to make our lives as miserable as possible. He has run the country into the ground, like he has done with so many of his businesses, and we are being left to sift through the shattered remains of a once-great nation.

On Friday, Trump signed an Executive Order protecting shrines to racist Confederate traitors who took up arms against this nation, leading to 620,000 gruesome deaths. Less than 24 hours earlier, the president launched a full-scale assault on the Affordable Care Act that, if successful, would lead to tens of millions of Americans losing their health insurance in the middle of a pandemic. A pandemic, mind you, that he has quit fighting as the death toll mounts toward 130,000.

To review: Trump is concerned about protecting statues dedicated to men who tried to break away from this country to preserve slavery, and he is unconcerned that living U.S. citizens have health insurance. Based on his coronavirus response, he seems disinterested in whether we live or die.

With Friday’s New York Times revelations, it is now clear the president has failed to protect Americans’ lives abroad as well as at home. This man, who has made a show of hugging the American flag, is being played for a fool by Vladimir Putin.

Trump has sat on the information about the bounties, just like he sat on the information about the coronavirus. His response to COVID-19 has been criminally negligent and shockingly incompetent, but the bounty situation is straight treasonous. With full knowledge of Russia's actions, Trump still lobbied for them to be included in the G7 Summit.

Russia can do no wrong in Trump’s eyes, starting with his denials that the Eastern European nation tampered with the 2016 election, despite intelligence reports to the contrary. For his entire presidency, Trump has moved heaven and earth to defend Putin.

It should come as no surprise Trump would do nothing, given all that has already transpired. Trump is clearly a Russian asset. We don’t know why, but it has become obvious he’s not acting in this nation’s best interest.

Trump looks out for one person: Himself. What do the Russians have on him? Whatever the answer, this man is no Commander-in-Chief. He is a traitor to our country, and those who died deserve justice.

Lock him up.
